Solar panel installation in Princeton carries two constraints most of New Jersey skips. We pull a full year of your PSE&G usage and model shading across all four seasons, which matters on lots with heavy oak cover. If the production numbers do not justify the spend, we say so at this stage rather than after a contract.

System Design and Panel Layout

03.
Permitting, Historic Review, and PSE&G Interconnection
We file your construction permits and handle PSE&G interconnection start to finish, and if your property sits in a designated historic district, we prepare the preservation plan application to Princeton’s Historic Preservation Commission under Municipal Code § 10B-380. It is the same review we walk clients through in Hopewell.
04.
Installation and Electrical Integration
Our licensed electricians run conduit through the attic instead of across your roof, leaving only panels visible from the ground, and the owner is on the job rather than dispatching it from another state.

Final Inspection, Activation, and Monitoring Setup
Once the township inspection clears and PSE&G issues permission to operate, we activate the system and set up your monitoring portal with you so you know what normal production looks like from week one.
What Net Metering Actually Credits You in PSE&G Territory
When your panels produce more than your home uses, the surplus flows back to the grid instead of going to waste.
New Jersey runs true 1:1 net metering, so PSE&G credits every exported kilowatt-hour at the same retail rate you pay to import one. Credits roll over month to month, with an annual true-up on whatever is left.
That 1:1 structure is a large part of why a right-sized system beats an oversized one here and everywhere else in Mercer County.

State and Local Solar Programs To Speed Up Your ROI
The 30% federal residential credit under Section 25D expired for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Cash and loan buyers no longer get it. What remains is state-level, and it is still strong:
- SuSI / SREC-II. A fixed payment per megawatt-hour, paid quarterly for 15 years. The rate locks when you register and steps down over time, so timing matters.
- Sales tax exemption. Equipment and labor are exempt from the state’s 6.625% sales tax.
- Property tax exemption. Solar’s added home value is exempt from assessment, which is worth real money at Princeton’s rates.
- Section 48E. Still active for commercial and third-party-owned systems.

How much tree shading is too much for solar to be worth it?
It depends on when the shade falls, not just how much there is. Heavy midday shading on your best south-facing plane is usually the dealbreaker. Morning or late-afternoon shade often is not, and module-level electronics can recover much of the loss. We model it before quoting.
Will solar panels raise my property taxes?
No. New Jersey exempts the added value of a renewable energy system from property tax assessment under N.J.S.A. 54:4-3.113. Given local tax rates, this exemption is worth more in Princeton than in most of the state.
Can I put a ground-mounted array on a wooded or large lot?
Often yes, if you have usable open land. Ground mounts trigger setback and height requirements under local zoning, and wooded lots need clear southern exposure. We compare roof and ground options during the assessment.
Will I still get a PSE&G bill after my system is on?
Yes, though it should be much smaller. You remain a PSE&G customer and still pay monthly service and delivery charges even in months when your credits cover all your usage.
What happens to my SREC-II payments if I sell the house?
They transfer with the system to the new owner for the remainder of the 15-year term. A registered, owned system with production history is generally an asset at closing rather than a complication.
