EVESHAM — Congregation Beth Tikvah is going solar thanks to a donation from one of its congregants.

Two months ago, Impact Solar LLC donated and installed a new roof and 200 solar panels on the synagogue on Evesboro-Medford Road. The Pennsauken company is owned by Rob Warren, who is also a member of the congregation.

The synagogue is in the process of switching from electric to solar energy and expects to be ready to go fully solar in a few weeks.

The full scope of the project would have cost about $150,000, according to Rabbi Nathan Weiner.

Warren approached the synagogue with the idea as a way to support a nonprofit and his local Jewish community.

“For a business to succeed, it needs to give back to the community consistently,” he said.

Congregation Beth Tikvah is the first synagogue in South Jersey to go solar, according to Weiner. While converting to solar energy is cost-effective in the long run, it can be difficult for many religious institutions to afford the hefty up-front costs, he said.

The gift from Impact Solar will help the congregation reduce its carbon footprint and energy costs, which in turn will aid its future financial stability, Weiner said.

“It’s going to be really good for the environment and really good for our electricity bill,” the rabbi said. “We’re hoping we can make a statement about our community’s dedication to clean energy.”

Congregation Beth Tikvah will hold a brunch reception to celebrate the project on April 15 at 10:30 a.m. Impact Solar will give a presentation about solar energy and how the project was designed. The event is open to the public.
